Date Time Format

Some APIs use them, some don't, but I'm a fan of sticking to ISO8601 for date/time. Note, though, that the spec allows two different ways of indicating GMT Offset:

This profile defines two ways of handling time zone offsets:

1) Times are expressed in UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), with a special UTC designator ("Z").
2) Times are expressed in local time, together with a time zone offset in hours and minutes. A time zone offset of "+hh:mm" indicates that the date/time uses a local time zone which is "hh" hours and "mm" minutes ahead of UTC. A time zone offset of "-hh:mm" indicates that the date/time uses a local time zone which is "hh" hours and "mm" minutes behind UTC.

A standard referencing this profile should permit one or both of these ways of handling time zone offsets.

The second option is quite nice and technically contains more info than the first even though both designate the same instant. But conforming to ISO8601 only requires that you handle ONE of those cases, not both. Watch out.

Running Again

Wow. It's been a while since I've written here eh? I guess my blogs have to be content driven after all. Started running again to train for another marathon (finally!). This time though, I have no Marathon specifically picked out. The idea is to just run. A LOT. And then once I'm used to running a lot of miles every day/week/all the time, try to run a marathon in under 10:00/mile.

Went for a 5 mile run Wednesday night that put me at around 9:30/mile and from experience last time, my long distance mile times didn't change too much since all I was focusing on was increasing distance. And most of my per mile times were around 10:00. The final per mile time of around 10:45 could be chalked up to the ridiculous hills at the big sur, the fact that it was 26 miles, and that I had ITBS and plantar fasciitis going on at the same time. Ideally, I could get my training long run per/mile down to low 9s and go from there.

So, yup. Running again. More speedwork and cross and weight training this time around too. There's a half marathon in about a month in Santa Barbara but with my weekly mileage at somewhere around 15 so far, so it might be a bit soon. I did get up to 12 miles within 4 weeks for the last marathon but...meh...it's supposed to be different this time right?

Well it's been a while. The design of this site stings my eyes now. Yeah, I knew it didn't look great when I first hacked out the template but it was an exercise in CSS. Time to go back to minimalistic type stuff. When I have time.

So...over the past two months I:

Went to Shanghai and ate lots, drank lots, and had a big family reunion-type good time there

Visited Malaysia for the first time (Kuala Lumpur and Melaka) and had lots of fun and ate lots. Also tried Vegemite (uhm....). Thanks to Shryh for showing me around!

Have been doing lots of fire spinning both in Santa Barbara and in China

Have been taking lots of pictures

Speaking of pictures too, I caught the DSLR craze and went and got myself (with generous help from Dad) a DSLR set up with:

Canon Digital Rebel XT

Canon EF 17-40mm F/4 L USM

Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 II

Canon EF 70-200mm F/4 L USM

Sandisk Ultra II 1GB Compact Flash

I also sold my old Sony DSC-F717 to Andre. Funds from that sale (plus a little extra) directly go to its replacement, a Casio Exilim EX-Z750 as an everyday camera with manual controls and which can also double as a camcorder. On a Sandisk Ultra II 1GB SD card, it can record over an hour's worth of tv-quality video!

Plans for the future? Lots of photography and fire dancing (and the combination thereof). The San Diego Rock 'n Roll Marathon. Finish my qualifying exams. Start my dissertation. Et. Cete. Ra.
